Fuel cost calculator

Work out what a trip costs. Pick your car to use its official economy, or type in your own.

Fuel cost–

Prices start at an example. Change them to what you pay. Economy starts at the car’s official combined figure, or a typical real-world one for cars without an official result.

Every drive, costed for you

Motora does this for every drive on its own: it records the drive, works out the fuel your exact car used from how you drove, and prices it with pump prices near you. See how the drive tracker works.

Questions

How is the fuel cost worked out?

Distance and economy give the fuel used (litres, gallons, or kWh for an electric car), and that times the price gives the cost. In litres per 100 km: litres = km × L/100 km ÷ 100.

Why is my real cost higher than this?

Official figures come from a standard lab test. Real driving with motorway speeds, short trips, cold engines, traffic and air conditioning usually uses more. Motora works out each of your drives from how you actually drove it.

What economy figures do you use?

The official combined figure for each car and engine, from the WLTP test for newer cars and NEDC for older ones. Older and rarer cars with no official result use a typical real-world figure.

How do I work out a plug-in hybrid’s cost?

Its official figure assumes the battery starts charged, so long trips use more fuel than that. Pick “Petrol or hybrid” and put in the economy you see on a long drive.
